Kinnow is a very popular fruit and kind of “citrus” fruit that is cultivated in the province of Punjab in Pakistan. Kinnow is a mixture (hybrid) of 2 cultivars- “Willow leaf” (citrus deliciosa) x King (Citrus nobilis)- developed by HB frost at the center of research of Calfornia University in the USA.  In 1935, Kinnow was presented as a new variety of commercial cultivation. In 1940, Punjab research and Agriculture center has introduced this fruit. It is very popular in Punjab province as major citrus fruits crop. In this post, we will describe the description, seedless Kinoow, export from Pakistan, harvesting, handling process, processing of fruit, and references.

The Kinnow fruit is orange and large with twelve to twenty-five seeds in a round shape. This crop matures in Jab or Feb. Its citrus fruit (easy peel) has assumed economic value and demand for export is increasing because it is the very juicy, soft, and special flavor. It is rich with vitamin C. Due to all this point it is very popular in the world and its marketing is easy, it has an excellent taste and aroma. Its tree is extremely very productive. It is common to have 1000 fruits/tree. Its export gives high returns and you can obtain the best crop by following some strategies and proper cultivation methods.

Seeds of Kinnow fruits are more than remaining types of citrus fruits. This high content of the seed is a hindrance in eating. According to a survey, some employees want to choose seedless kinnows. The seeds of Kinnow are diploid-2 or tetraploid-4.  Another seedless triploid variety is developed however; there are different testing methods to check the health value. Pakistani Kinnow is in demand in an international market due to uniqueness in taste. They demand seedless Kinnow. About 62% of world exports of Citrus export are seedless varieties.

Now handling and harvesting of Kinnow start if its external color turns to orange (Nov to Feb). The best time is counted when acid or TSS ratio is 12:1 – 14:2. You can judge the quality of fruits. A sharp clipper is used to clip the stem during the harvesting of fruit. They try to cut the stem as short as they cut the fruit without damaging it then it is packed and exported. If you want to increase its shelf-like then coating is done on it. It’s saved in a cold atmosphere on the temperature of 4 to 5 degree centigrade and humidity of (85 to 90 percent). The best quality of Kinnow (smooth-skin, soft and deep orange) is packed and stored to export. We can judge better with the help of our hands.
